Uffizi Gallery Florence

The Uffizi Gallery Florence (Galleria degli Uffizi) , despite its moderate size, holds the worlds largest collection of Italian and Florentine art. Located in the Uffizi Palace, the Uffizi Gallery Florence was built by Vasari in the late 16th century for Cosimo I de’ Medici. In fact, the Uffizi Gallery Florence houses the Medici family’s collection, which was bequeathed to Florence on the condition it never left the city.

Accademia Gallery Florence

The Accademia Gallery Florence (Galleria dell'Accademia) houses perhaps one of the most famous masterpieces which is associated with the city - David by Michelangelo. The statue was carved from a single block of marble in 1502 and was originally situated in Piazza della Signoria.

Now located in Accademia Gallery Florence, David resides in pride of place at the end of the main hall on the ground floor. As well as this attraction, the Accademia Gallery Florence also houses works from Michelangelo such as unfinished Slaves (which seem to be held captive by the marble from which they are made) and Florentine artists from the 13th - 16th centuries.
