Pitti Palace Florence

Pitti Palace Florence and the Boboli Gardens Florence can be found in Oltrarno, across the river from the Duomo. Pitti Palace Florence was originally built for the Pitti family but was latter acquired by the Medici’s. The Pitti Palace today houses a number of museums and galleries (as well as lavish Royal Apartments), such as the Galleria Palatina, Galleria del Costume (Costume Gallery), Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Gallery of Modern Art), Museo degli Argenti (Silver Museum), Museo delle Porcellane (Porcelain Museum) as well as the surrounding Boboli Gardens.

You can buy a combined ticket which allows you to visit all the museums or you can buy a ticket for each separately.

About Florence
Galleria Palatina
Florence Palazzo Pitti

Galleria Palatina is the principal gallery in the Pitti Palace and houses Florence’s second most important collection after the Uffizi Gallery. Among the paintings, you will see pieces by Raphael, Titian, Andrea del Sarto, Fra Filippo Lippi, Sandro Botticelli, Giorgio Vasari, Rosso, Caravaggio, Tintoretto and Rubens. Certainly a vast collection by any standards.

Following on from Galleria Palatina, there are the Appartamenti Reali (Royal Apartments), which are richly decorated rooms where the Medici family used to entertain their guests. Each room has a colour theme and are heavily adorned with chandeliers, curtains, silk, etc.

Galleria del Costume

The Galleria del Costume (Costume Gallery) has over 4000 articles of clothing, both men’s and women’s, from the 16th century to the present. Some important pieces are clothes belonging to Cosimo I de' Medici, his wife Eleonora di Toledo, and their son Don Garzia, as well as dresses and costumes in impeccable condition from the 18th and 19th century.

Galleria d’Arte Moderna

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Gallery of Modern Art) covers mostly Tuscan works from the 18th to mid-20th century. Works include pieces from the proto-Impressionist Macchiaioli school, sculpture by Giovanni Duprè of Cain and Abel as well as Neoclassical and Romantic pieces.

Museo degli Argenti

The Museo degli Argenti (Silver Museum) has a collection of silver ware, glass ware as well as semi precious stones from the vast Medici Collections.

Museo delle Porcellane

Museo delle Porcellane (Porcelain Museum), situated in the Boboli Gardens, houses a collection of fine porcelain from the households of Cosimo I de’ medici and Eleonora de Toledo along with pieces from Sèvres and Vincennes.

Boboli Gardens

Florence Boboli Garden

The Boboli Gardens extend between Pitti Palace and Forte Belvedere on Boboli hill and were designed by Tribolo in 1549, with later additions by Ammanati and Buontalenti. Forte Belvedere, a 16th century fortress, dominates the gardens and was designed by Buontalenti for the Grand Duke Ferdinando I.

The Boboli Gardens, filled with fountains, shady walks and alcoves, is the ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Visit the artificial grotto by Buontalenti and see Venere by Giamboogna. Many come to get away from the heat of the city in the summer and enjoy a picnic under dappled shade. In June there are often classical music concerts held in the garden.
